In July 2018, Joyce will celebrate her 14th year anniversary as a member of the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain family. She has held the position of Executive Assistant to the serving President of the College, now referred to as the Chancellor position. The year she began working at the College, the staff had just completed writing a self-study and was preparing for reaccreditation. Her first project was helping to organize printed materials for a resource room for the Higher Learning Commission Accreditation Visiting Team. She edited the College’s most recent self-study. Her responsibilities are across the board from analyzing and comparing the UA System and College’s policies to helping prepare receptions for events like the science fair or serving at a Foundation event.
“Working in higher education is very rewarding. Every May, after printing the College’s graduation program, I get to walk the halls distributing commencement programs to graduates preparing for crossing the stage to be recognized for their achievements. In the past few years, I watched the Administrative Team and Board of Visitors analyze, review, and finalize plans in the best interest for this institution and for this region to move forward with the request for merger with the University of Arkansas System. The Foundation Board of Directors have continued to raise funds and awareness for the needs for scholarships and support of this College. The College is a great place to work”, stated Sanden.
Joyce is an alumna of Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy, Arkansas, a community west of Hot Springs. She also obtained her Associate of General Studies from Rich Mountain Community College while working at the College.
Before moving back to Arkansas in 2001, she spent 21 years in Allen, Texas at DLM, Inc., later renamed Lyrick Studios. Lyrick Studios created and filmed the television show, Barney. In the beginning, her responsibilities were international related and later she served as administrative assistant to the distribution center. She and her husband of 44 years, Randal, moved to Mena after spending 25 years in the Dallas, Texas area. When they moved to Mena, her job prior to working at the College in 2004 was working at US Electrical Motors, now Nidec Motor Corporation, where she worked with engineers and on special manufacturing projects.
Joyce’s hobbies are quilting and gardening. She spends more of her time with either one, depending on the weather. Her parents still live in Hot Springs and most of her family live in either Arkansas or Texas. She most looks forward to her visits from their son, Randal, Jr., daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, and her precious granddaughters, Katelyn, Emma, and Olivia. Each summer, she and her husband, Randal reserve a couple of weeks for them to spend time at their home in the country to escape the busy city life. Besides helping with all Foundation events, she also volunteers at the Acts of Love Food Pantry each month.
Come by campus and meet Joyce Sanden, Executive Assistant to the Chancellor at UA Rich Mountain!
